AMATEUR WRESTLING
Olympic Council Supports
Affiliation
TOUR BY AUSTRALIANS POSSIBLE A deputation representing amateur wrestling bodies waited on the council of the New Zealand Olympic and Empire Games Association last night, with a request for the affiliation of an amateur wrestling association. The members of the deputation, which was heard in committee, were Messrs. J. D. Willis, chairman of the management committee of the Dominion Wrestling Union; J. Steel, a member of the management committee; and G, Slade. Prior to the deputation being received, Mr. H. McCormick, chairman of the council, stated that the Dominion Wrestling Union was endeavouring to arrange a tour of New Zealand by an Australian teain consisting of six wrestlers, a trainer and a manager. This team was prepared to leave as soon as a New Zealand amateur association could be formed and affiliated with the International Amateur Wrestling Federation. The council discussed at length the request for affiliation, and it was pointed out that a meeting last August had decided to postpone discussion on a previous request for six months. Eventually a motion was carried as follows: — “That this meeting, being of the opinion that the Dominion Wrestling Union is the only body exercising effective control over amateur wrestling throughout the Dominion, considers that it should be formally admitted to membership of this association as soon as it is practicable within the rules to rescind the resolution of August 25, 1936, postponing consideration of the question until the next annual meeting, and that members present agree to sunport a motion of rescission,, and pending such rescission this council .in fact recognises the Dominion Wrestling Union as the sole controlling body of amateur wrestling in New Zealand; provided that neither this resolution nor subsequent rescission of the aforesaid previous resolution nor any resolution hereafter passed formally admitting the Dominion Wrestling Union to membership of this association shall bind this association if direct advice from the International Amateur M’restling Federation does not confirm the cabled advice from the Amateur Boxing and Wrestling Union of Australia communicated to this council by the Dominion Wrestling Union in its letter of November 4, 1936.
