HOUSING PROBLEM

Position in Wellington

■Wellington’s housing problem was briefly discussed at the meeting of the city council last night. Four more permits were granted to property-owners to convert two-storied buildings into fiats in Aro Street. Karori Road, Park Street, and Davis Street. A permit was also granted for a block of 15 flats in Tinakori Road. Cr. R. MeKeen, M.P., who has been abroad for some months, asked what had happened about housing in his absence. Had the Government proposed any scheme to the council < r sought co-operation in carrying it out? The mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop: “No, uo definite scheme. All we know at present is that money is available at 3 per cent.” The council’s own housing survey was held up somewhat pending the issue of regulations. He understood the Government itself intended to erect 90 or so houses near Miramar. He presumed these'would be built in a reasonably short space of time. Cr. MeKeen : We have sections which could be used. The mayor: We have a lot of land that could be made available. Advice was received from the Ministry of Housing that there was no intention at present to use the Government land fronting Crawford Green. .Miramar, for housing purposes.
