By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, November 11.
Edward Vincent Carthew, aged 28, appeared for sentence to-day on a charge of being found without lawful excuse on the steamer Niagara. Counsel said that Carthew was sorry for what had occurred, and realised that the trouble was due to liquor. He owned a farm at Te Rapa and was prepared to take out a prohibition order. Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M., admitted Carthew to probation for two years, a condition being that he absolutely abstain from alcohol during that time.
