LOANS FOR HOUSES
Advances by State Corporation
850 NEW DWELLINGS •« The statement made in Auckland by a representative of a firm dealing in building materials, that the firm had not heard of a single house building loan that had been granted in Auckland by the State Advances Corporation, was replied to yesterday by the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, who said that he could not understand such a statement being made. The Prime Minister indicated that from the time the Mortgage Corporation was established up to the present time the corporation and its successor, the State Advances Corporation, had granted loans for the erection of no fewer than 850 new houses in the Dominion. Mr. Savage added that, of course, not all of these houses were in Auckland and its environs, but he had had information taken out covering the last two months since the Government’s housing scheme had been in force, and he had found that the State Advances Corporation had granted loans to 44 applicants in Auckland and its environs for the erection of new dwellings. Within the last month the State Advances Corporation had authorised loans for the erection of 200 new dwellings in the whole of New Zealand, indicating clearly that the policy of the Government was certainly being implemented. The statement to which Mr. Savage referred was reported in a Special Service message published yesterday.
