BRIGHT COMEDY

ONE of the maddest, merriest and most entertaining films released for many a day was screened privately in Wellington a few nights ago. It was Universal’s “My Man Godfrey,” which stars William Powell, Carole Lombarde, Gail Patrick and the one and only Alice Brady, who walks off with the entire show. The story tells of life in the almost nit-wit family of a New York financier and of how, in the course of a scavenger - hunt, in which a forgotten man from a city dump has to be obtained, one of the daughters finds a man who is later engaged as the family butler. The family is so eccentric that he nearly leaves on numerous occasions, especially when the youngest daughter decides to adopt him as her protege. What happens leads up to an hilarious climax. The acting throughout the film is flawless, every member of the cast giving a noteworthy performance—and it is very hard to give of one’s best iu a film that is sheer burlesque from start to finish. Sufficient .to say, the audience is .kept in one shriek of laughter after another and finally gets to the stage that nothing that could happen could cause additional surprise. As a gloom-chaser it is second to none.
