Railway Tradesmen’s

Association

The biennial conference of the Railway Tradesmen’s Association was officially opened by Mr. G. H. Mackley, General Manager of Railways, in Wellington, yesterday morning. Mr. Mackley expressed his sincere appreciation of the co-operation and goodwill displayed by the association's officers in the negotiations with respect to tiie introduction of the 40-hour week. Ail concerned, he felt, would benefit as the result, with no consequent falling-off in output. None of the industrial firms where the shorter working week had been introduced had suffered any loss. He said lie considered the prospects for the future to be remarkably bright. Later, the Minister of Railways. Hon. D, G. Sullivan, visited the conference. Next year, he said, ‘he Government -intended introducing a national superannuation sefieme that would be much in advance of anything of that nature attempted in any part of the world He was endeavouring to see that the service was supplied with tiie best equipment and the best possible conditions, thereby enabling the service to be given its full and economic position in the Dominion. The president thanked the Minister and the General Manager for attend ing the conference. The conference is being attended by Messrs W. J Leitch (president), E. JMulligan. S. Haigh, A. Cook. T. EOliver. W J. Tegg, G. E. Jackson. H. G Stevens and the general secretary , (Mr. S. Ingram).
