DELICATE MANOEUVRE
Crane Shifted Across River WANGANUI NOTES Dominion Special Service. Waugauui, September 18. Now that the north mole at the entrance to the Wanganui Harbour has been raised to rail level, the task oi shitting the Waugauui Harbour Board s 36-ton steam crane to the other side or the river is occup'yiug the engineer, Mr. R. R. Dawson. The Crane is used tor lifting the heavy blocks of shell rock from punt to wharf, and yesterday it was removed from the wharf to a specially prepared barge. Before this operation, which was a delicate manoeuvre, the undercarriage and other detachable parts of the crane were removed, reducing its weight to 30 tons. The bucket dredge and greased skids were employed to lower the chane to the barge, which took its weighty cargo safely across the river to the south mole this morning. Other equipment will be transferred so that the work of raising the south mole may be carried out.
Police and Press Rugby. The public will expect good entertainment at to-morrow’s Police v. ” re .ta Rugby match. Preceding this event will be the St Patrick’s (Palmerston North) v. Marist (Wanganui) match, to commence at 1.1,5 p.m. At 3 p.m. the Wanganui Highland Pipe Band will give its drum-major’s display. At 3.10 the Old Boys v. Kaierau match for the final of the Charity Cup will start, and at 8 p.m. there will be the -Police-Press dance in the Peter Pan hall. , The Press team will- be chosen from the following:—Backs, W. Kidd, W. Wakeling, A. Workman, N. Barlow, R. Wakeling, R. McNeil, A. Lowe (captain). Forwards, A. Simpson, W. Shipman, H. Granville, G. Delves, J. A. Col way. R. Childs, J. Watson, Ward, R. Clayton (“Taranaki News”), and W. Porteous. The emergencies will be “Forward and “Crossbar’ so long as they refrain from comment , ~ ’ ~ ~v The police team will be: H, L. binith; M. Shewan, A. Vessels Delayed. Because of rain at Wellington, the hapiti was unable to load yesterday for Wanganui. and she is now not expected before Saturday. The Breeze has also been delayer! by rain in the south, but it is expected she will complete her Lyttelton and Wellington loading tor Manganui by to-morrow, to arrive here on Sunday. She will commence her discharge on Monday at the Town W hart. An arrival yesterday was the Shell company’s tanker Paua, which pumped a cargo of bulk oil ashore to the depot at Castlecliff. She sailed to-night for Wellington. _—
