HUTT VALLEY NEWS

BUILDING IN HUTT

> Residents’ Views of Controversy While the weight of opinion appears to be against the idea that there is no shortage of houses in Lower Hutt, the views of various residents approached support the protest of the Mayor, Mr. J. W. Andrews, against the proposed Government housing scheme. “There is not a house shortage, there is a house famine,” said one land agent. “People come to me daily wanting houses and they’re willing to pay £2 or a week. We’ve a long fist of them. He said he knew of a family living in a room and a half. Other residents agreed that there was a dearth of houses in the borough. A feeling of antagonism toward the possibility of Government houses being erected in Lower Hutt was also manifest One well-known resident was fearful lest, notwithstanding the Minister’s assurances, the houses were not an asset to the district, or that if they were as good as was promised, the wrong class of people would be put into them. _ Another land agent said that a £OOO house put next,to a £l3OO one was not going to advance property values, but no one would deny that the Government had built good houses. A builder agreed whole-heartedly with Mr. Andrews. •He had u number of properties in the valley, and while it was easy to get tenants, he did not think there was any dearth of houses. The Government’s plans were having their effect on employment. Bix months ago every carpenter was employed, but there was no shortage now. He thought it was “over the fence” that the Government should be coming in the way it intended, oVet the heads of the Hutt builders and joiners, Who could deal with the problem if the. Mortgage Corporation would ease the money situation. They were very slow in making mortgage payments, and even in the case of subsidies it took from eight to ten weeks to get them through.
