Two Hundred Men Camped WANGANUI NOTES Dominion Special Service. Wanganui, September 17. Over 200 men are encamped at intervals along the Parapara Road, where restoration work will begin This is the largest number of workmen to be employed on work of this nature for several years. The river road also is being repaired. When repair work is completely under way over'soo men will be engaged. The weather, however, has interfered. It has been estimated that the £lOO.OOO a year during the three years necessary for tile work will be spent iu Wanganui in wages. Flower Show.
Beautifully transformed into bays and l,pes of glorious spring flowers, the Wanganui and Suburban Horticultural Society's spring narcissi show opened this afternoon iu the drill hall. Considering the unfavourable spring the entries, which are a few below those of last year, are exceptionally good. Some fine blooms were exhibited. Mr. G. A. Ammuudseu's "Dawson City” was judged the champion trumpet, and the champion of champions cup and championship certificate were awarded to Messrs. Lethbridge aud Miller & "Buffo.” The society’s silver challenge cup for competition in the opeu section was won by Mr. W. A. Grace. .Mrs. Fowler won the trophy for the amateur section. The Wanganui-West Coast championship was awarded to Mr. F. R. I’epperill, who donated another trophy, which was awarded to Mr. F. A. Johnson. The judges were: Narcissi, open and amateur, Mr. C. Goodsou (Hawera) ; narcissi, intermediate novice. Mr. W. A. Grace (Wanganui) ; cut flowers and pot plants, Mr. W. G. Martin (Wanganui) ; decorative classes, Mrs. J. A. Harris (Turakina). The show, remained open this evening and will close to-mor-row evening.
Seafleld Ladies’ Golf Club. Miss P. Bell won Miss Allan's trophy at the Seafield Ladies’ Golf Club. The eclectic competition for Mrs. O’Hallorau’s trophy resulted: Mrs. Simmons, 88; Misses V. Murray, C. Muir and p. Bell, 89. There will be no draw for Saturday because of the men’s tournament.' Tuesday players will be able to choose their own partners; those without partners will be paired at the clubhouse.
Automobile Association. At a meeting ’ last night of the executive of the Automobile Association (Wanganui); Inc., 28 new members were elected. The membership now stands at approximately 2050, a little ahead of the Wairarapa association. The secretary, Mr. F. J. Hill, reported that 130 applications had been received for the position of patrol at Feilding. A special committee had reduced this figure to four, and the successful applicant will he chosen in the near future.
Playing in. the Masterton Y.M.C.A. billiards and snooker competition, Post Office defeated Carriers by six games to four. In both the billiards and the snooker Post Office prevailed by three games to two. To-night Oddfellows will meet Y.M.C.A. A, nnd on Tuesday Daniells will play Carriers.
Mr. H. Robinson has been appointed probation officer at Wanganui, according to a Gazette notice published last night.
