TORRENTIAL RAIN

Deluge at Palmerston v DISTRICT SATURATED Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, September 17. Torrential raiil showers throughout today flooded streets aud low-lying properties in Palmerston North, but fortunately the ruin eased off this afternoon aud no serious damage resulted. The rain commenced eurly in the morning, gradually increasing in intensity until shortly alter 9 a.m. when a “cloutiburst" lusting eleven minutes turned streets into miniature rivers. From then uutii early in the afternoon many exceptionally heavy showers added to the unpleasantness of the conditions. So heavy were several of the showers that buildings on one side of the Square appeared from the other side as through a dense blanket of fog. Gutters were unable •to cope with the sudden rush of water. In many places the water overflowed on to footpaths, while at many street corners lakelets quickly formed The footpaths in the eity area slope from the shops to the gutters, so that water is unable to gain entrance to shojis. In residential areas, however, many of the footpaths are level, and the entrances to numerous houses became, miniature lakes, sometimes over a foot deep. When the rain stopped the water soon disappeared. Gusty westerly wind made conditions unpleasant. About 5 p.m. the elouds -broke, and from then conditions showed a tendency to improve, although the wind continued to whip round the buildings. For over a month very wet weathey has been experienced in Palmerston North, with only a few successive fine days. Residential gardens and farm properties are saturated, causing considerable delay with gardening and seasonal rural operations. Much the same weather has been experienced in the Feilding district, and reports from that area are that seasonal agricultural work is at a standstill and behind schedule, while it is anticipated that crops will be later than usual in maturing this year.
