Probation for Salesmen A salesman, aged 25, James Douglas Galbraith, was admitted to probation for 18 months by Mr. W. F. Stilwell, S.M.„ in the Magistrate’s Court, Wellington, on Saturday, for failing to account for £32 6/6 at Greymouth. Seven charges were preferred against him. Detective-Sergeant L. B. Revell, prosecuting for the police, said that last February Galbraith opened a debt collecting agency at Greymoutb, called the Australasian Security Corporation. He received accounts from several firms, notably Schaef’s, Ltd., and Martin's, both of Greymouth. He paid moneys amounting to £32/6/6 into his own trading account instead of into bis trust account. He was arrested in Wellington on Friday. Accused's explanation was that he had started the business in a big way. He had been associated with a man older than himself who had been responsible for taking most of the money. The man was remanded on another charge on Friday. Mr. A. J. Mazengarb, for Galbraith, said accused was a married roan and he had been influenced by the other man referred to. From October to February he was in the agency business at Greymouth. Overhead charges were high and he paid some of the money he had received ou behalf of clients of the business into his own trading account. In respect of Martin’s he accounted for part of the money. Before he knew he was being prosecuted he wrote to Schaef’s promising to send them the money. He had been frank with the police. Accused was at present in a job on commission in Wellington and had been in the city for some months. In- asking for probation counsel also requested the suppression of Galbraith’s name. The magistrate refused to suppress accused’s name and admitted him to probation for 18 months on the first charge, which involved £ll/4/6. He was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence on the other charges if called upon within .18 months. Conditions of the probation were that Galbraith’s activities should be supervised by the probation officer and that restitution be made. REMAND TO GREYMOUTH Charged with the theft of sums of monex totalling £7l/13/4 at Greymouth between December 19, 1933. and May 19, 1934, Edward John Hill, salesman, aged 31, was remanded by Mr. W. F. Stilwell, S.M., lin the Magistrate’s Court, Wellington, to appear at Greymouth, on September 18. Bail was alllowed in the sum of £5O and one surety for that amount. ?
