TRADE AGREEMENT

New Zealand and Canada ANOTHER EXTENSION Finance Minister Outlines Position An extension of the existing trade agreement between Canada and New Zealand until September 30, 1937, has been arranged between the two Governments concerned.

In announcing the decision yesterday the Minister of Finance, Hon. W. Nash, said“ The agreement was originally brought into operation on May 24,1932, and was to have remained in force for a period of one year, but it has from time to time been extended, the last extension being from November 24, 1935, to July 31, 1936. On that occasion provision was made for modification of the duties on motor vehicles imported from Canada into this Dominion —the amended duties becoming effective on May 1, 1936. ‘‘The position with respect to trade between Canada and New Zealand during the last five years is as follows:

“The desirability of revising the agreement to ensure as far as possible an exchange of trade more equitable from the point of view of this Dominion is fully recognised by the Government, and it is hoped to take steps in that direction before expiry of the extended period now arranged. As has been intimated previously, the Government propose to give attention to the question of trade, first, with the United Kingdom, secondly with British Dominions, and then with other countries. As soon as the position regarding trade with the United Kingdom has been finalised attention will be directed toward negotiation of a new agreement with Canada, ~ “An Qrder-in-Council giving effect to the extension of the agreement will be published in the ‘New Zealand Gazette’ this week.”
