SERVICE TO VALLEY Proposed Testimonial to Mr. J. W. McEwan COMMITTEE SET UP “I think the time has arrived for us to formulate a fitting recognition of the public cervices rendered by Mr. J. W.. McEwan to the residents of the Hutt Valley and Petone in particular,” eaid Mr. A. Scholefield, Mayor of Petone, at a meeting of citizens of the borough last evening. Mr. McEwan had been Mayor of Petone for 20 years and had given fine and distinguished service in that office as well as on many other local bodies. Mr. Scholefield said he favoured raising a fund b.v circular letters to the public bodies of which Mr. McEwan had been a member, and to the business. men of the borousrh. The public might give donations at the town clerk’s office. He added that already be had received several donations toward the testimonial. An organising committee has set up with Mr. Scholefield as chairman and the town clerk, Mr. H. Firth, as secretarytreasurer. OPENING DAY FIXED New Church of San Antonio The Rev. Father Mann is, S.M., has issued invitations to the formal opening of the new Church of San Antonio, Rona Bay, Eastbourne, which is to take place on Sunday afternoon, August 2. Archbishop O’Shea will preside at-the opening, and there will be a large gathering of the clergy. The foundation of this building was laid by Arehbishop O’Shea toward the end of last summer in the presence of a large gathering, so that the builders have done their part in making the church available for service well within contract time. Pontifical Benedicton will follow the opening ceremony.
NEW BUS SHELTERS IN LOWER HUTT
Four new bus shelters arc to be erected in Lower Hutt. Advice to this effect has been received by the Hon. W. Nash, M.P. for the district, from the Minister of Railways. The new shelters will be built at the following pointe: Corner Park Avenue and High Street; White’s Line East, opposite Waiwhetu Road; Randwick Road, near telephone box; corner Fairfield Avenue and Waiwhetu Road.
