* Special Night at Kilbirnie PROMISING PERFORMERS That amateur wrestling is making progress in Wellington was evident from the high standard of performance maintained at the special night held by the Kilbirnie Amateur Wrestling and Athletic Club at its well-equipped gymnasium last night. Mr. H. J. Thompson, the referee, insisted that amateur rules must be observed, and disqualified B. Liddle, of Johnsonville for elbow-jolting C. McDonald (Kilbirnie) in the second round of a welterweight bout, in which Liddle had secured a fall in the first round.
Following are the results of the bouts: Flyweight.—L. Dayman (Kilbirnie), 7st. 81b., beat A. Cammish (Island Bay), Bst.; A. Mulholland (Kilbirnie), 7sL 31b., beat A. Perry (Johnsonville), 7st. Paperweight.—H. Dooley (Kilbirnie), 6st. 111 b., beat W. McFadyen (Island Bay), 6st. 131 b.; T. Maddocks (Kilbirnie), sst. 91b., beat D. Regalsford (Kilbirnie), sst. 91b.; H. Compton (Kilbirnie), Gst. 51b., beat C. Masterton (Johnsonville), 6et. 41b. Bantamweight.—G. Jowett (Petone), Bst. 31b., beat W. Ward (Kilbirnie), Set. 11b.; D. Deslandes (Kilbirnie), Bst. 71b., beat J. Lockwood (Petone), Set. 31b. Featherweight.—L. Ruby (Kilbirnie), Bst. 121 b., beat L. Drew (Johnsonville), 9st. Welterweight.—C. McDonald (Kilbirnie), fist. 131 b., beat B. Liddle (Johnsonville), lOst. 21b. Liddle eecured a fall in the first round, but was disqualified in the second round for elbow-jolting. S. McDonald (Kilbirnie), lOet. 61b., beat C. Sou th wood (Karori), lOst. 61b., the latter crying enough in the second round. D. Flett (Island Bay), fist. 111 b., beat W. Cook .(Kilbirnie), lOst 41b. . Middleweight.—P. McCaeker (Kilbirnie), runner-up for the New South Wales amateur championship, beat A. Smith (Karori) on pointe. Catch-weights.—D. Godfrey (Police Gym.), 12st, beat A. McDonald (Kilbirnie), list. 101 b. This was a stirring contest. of which the policeman had all the better, showing considerable science and revealing good condition. Tribute to Referee. During the evening the patron of .the club, Mr. H. Leah, presented the referee, Mr. H. J. Thompson, with a case of pipes in recognition of the valuable help he had given the club over a long period. On the call of the patron, cheers were given for Mr. Thompson. Vaudeville items were sandwiched between the wrestling bouts. Songs were sung by Mrs. Hoy and Mr. Nicholl, an Irish jig was danced by Miss Dorothy Aitkens, and a dance duo was performed by Miss Beau and Master J. Desler. Perhaps the beet item on an entertaining programme wa« the splendid exhibv tion of hand-to-hand balancing which was given by Mr. A. Jenkins, physical director, and three of his pupils, Messrs. J. G Steel, E. Warner and H. Pepper.
