UNDER-SECRETARIES
Relief For Ministers
APPOINTMENTS LIKELY Consideration is being given by the Government to the question of appointing several Parliamentary Under-Sec-retaries, with a view to easing the heavy load of administrative work devolv'ng upon Cabinet Ministers. The Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, said yesterday in an interview that it was planned to make additional appointments as the need arose. It was recognised that the British precedent was a good one, In that it enabled younger members of the Government party to acquire intimate knowledge of administrative details and also to gain some practical exper'ence of the duties and responsibilities of Ministers. The value of such an "apprenticeship” could not be overlooked, and a great deal could be said in favour of the system in Great Britain.
So far, there is only one Parliamentary Under-Secretary in New Zealand, Mr. J. A. Lee, M.P. for Grey Lynn, who has been associated with the Prime Minister. This year Mr. Lee has been exceptionally busy making a survey of housing needs throughout the Dominion, and co-operating in the preparation of machinery to give effect to the Government’s projected housing scheme. —
