Marked Tonnage Decrease
London, July 21. Lloyd’s Register shows that in tho past 10 years British-owned shipping decreased by 2,122,000 tons, while nearly every other country in the same period increased its merchant fleet. For example, Norway's shipping increased by 1,436.000 tons and Germany’s by 702,000 tons. British tonnage has decreased by 1,709,000 tons, representing 9 per cent., since 1914, while foreign tonnage increased by 76 per cent. The “Daily Telegraph’s” shipping writer says that the significance of the figures need not be stressed, as all authorities agree that the mercantile marine is as vital as the navy to national defence.
