LOSS TO DANCING WORLD
Death of “La Argentina” “Ah. what a loss to the world!” was the comment of Signor Guido Carreras, impresario and husband of La Meri, the daneer, when the death of “La. Argentina’’ was mentioned to him at the Hotel St. George yesterday. “ ‘La Argentina,’ ’’ he said, “was the greatest Spanish daneer of all time. She was called 'La- Argentina’ because she happened to be born in Buenos Aires, but she was actually pure Spanish, her real name lieing Antonia Merce. “I suppose that for (he last twelve years 'La Argentina’ has been accepted as the greatest Spanish dancer in the world,” he continued, “possibly the greatest who ever lived. She was grace itself, and in the traditional dances of her country exerted a lure that was irresistible.' She was decorated with the Legion of Honour by the, French Government, and she was the first woman tq be decorated by the Republican Government of Spain after the dismissal of Alfonso. On that occasion she was decorated with the Cordon Isabelle. Her death is a great loss to the dancing world.”
