CORONATION PLANS
Nature of Celebrations to be Decided WHAT WAS DONE IN 1911 Although no definite plans have yet been formulated to celebrate, in New Zealand the coronation of King Edward VIII in May next, the form and extent of the celebrations is receiving consideration in official quarters. Apart from what is intended by the State and local authorities, the executives of some Wellington firms have already made preliminary arrangements for appropriate decorative displays, for early preparations are necessary by those concerns which intend to import special materials for decoration purposes.
Appropriate celebrations were held on the occasion of the last? coronation, that of King George V in June 1911. New Zealand was directly represented at the coronation by'its Prime Minister, Sir Joseph Ward, and AttorneyGeneral, Hon. J. G. (later Sir John) Findlay. The celebrations at Home were attended by a special New Zealand contingent, and the London decorations included a New Zealand Coronation Arch.
Coronation medals were issued to New Zealand school children and subsidies were paid to local bodies, many of which celebrated the occasion by utilising the grant for the construction of coronation halls and the provision of other public utilities. On the actual coronation day there were commemorative functions and special services in the churches. Incidentally the New Zealand Government suggested that a contingent of British regular troops should be sent to New Zealand at its expense to take part in the coronation festivities here, but this suggestion was ruled out by the British authorities as impossible of fulfilment on the grounds of practical convenience, including the likelihood of similar applications from elsewhere.
Celebrations in Wellington included special services in the churches, a review of the military forces, free picture, shows for children and a torchlight procession and military tattoo. Public buildings in the city were decorated and brightly illuminated by night. '
