PUNCHESTOWN JUMPS
Schooling at Riccarton SHORT SPELL FOR CAPITAL Dominion Special Service. Cliristchurch, July 21. Hi-h Speed, who received a cut in one of bis legs while racing at Trentham, was given his first serious work to-day when be schooled over a round of country. He jumped well throughout and pulled up apparently sound, but it is doubtful if he will fulfil his engagement at "Washdyke on Saturday. The stable will, however, have a useful representative in Nocturnus, who gave an excellent display over eight fences in company with Punchestown (A, Peart). He jumped away from hw mate at practically every obstacle, and if he could add stamina to his pace and ability he would win some good steeplechases. Punchcstowu was ridden by Peart for the first time, and was allowed to jump sluggishly, but better results will be forthcoming when the new combination has had more experience together. Peart is to ride him at Washdyke on Saturday, and it is understood will have the mount on him in the Grand National Steeplechase. Peart, has proved himself one of the best hurdle horsemen in. New Zealand and but for his weight he would have taken high rank among flat riders. He rode Valpeen to victory at Riccarton two years ago. . Courtyard, ridden by his trainer, D. O’Connor, gave a fair exhibition over a round of hurdles. O’Connor is to ride this gelding at Washdyke and hopes to get a more satisfactory response from him than he has given in recent race efforts. ~ , .. ■ Ten Urn developed a big leg after his race at Waimate, and has been returned to his owner.' It is not likely he will be seen out again this -winter. , t F D. Jones has had two rising two-year-olds broken in and they will he put aside until he returns from Sydney. One te a filly bv Posterity from Damarte purchased by Mr. A. K. Firth, of Christchurch, at Trentham for 300 guineas, and the other is a brother to Miracle, by Siegfried from Polly Poachum, bought by Mr. D. E. Wanklyu, of Christchurch, for 10 guineas.
