In the event of Hie 40-hour week being introduced in the Christchurch tramway service, it is likely that there will be a substantial increase in the. rate. The chairman of the tramway board (the Rev. J. K. Archer) said that the introduction of the 40-hour week in the board's traffic departmem would mean the employment of between 25 and 30 additional hands and a cost of between £9OOO and £lO,OOO.
