STATE TAKES LEASE OF FILM STUDIO

Publicity Pictures to Be Produced at Miramar

Although the Government film studio at Miramar has produced a large number of scenic films and one or two story pictures, the activities during the depression years were severely curtailed. Now, however, production, is to be increased, under an arrangement involving the lease of the studio. The Hon. IV. Lee-Martin, acting on behalf of the Hon. F. Langstone, Minister in Charge of the Tourist and Publicity Department, has announced that, in pursuance of 'its policy of extending and strengthening overseas publicity and advertising, the Government has concluded an arrangement to lease the premises of Filmeraft, Ltd., at Miramar, with its motion picture aud photographic equipment, for the purpose of increasing considerably the production of sound films of New Zealand life and interest,, and also to further the output of modern advertising media of all descriptions for overseas display purposes. This is expected to play an increasingly important part in the building up of the New Zealand tourist'traffic. The facilities made available by the acquisition of the Miramar laboratories will be utilised to the utmost by the department. The advertising of the Dominion’s primary products by the use\ of modern display methods will also be properly provided for, and it Is expected that valuable co-ordination will be effected with the marketing department and various export boards and importers in overseas countries. The services of the skilled technical staff previously employed by Filmcraft will be retained, and Mr. R. W. Fenton has been placed in charge of this branch of the department. Mr. Fenton. who has had previous exnerience in Government departments, was for some years assistant publicity officer. The premises which the department bus taken over were erected in 1927 by Mr. A. A. P. Mackenzie, and in design and finish the building is considered to form a model factory.

Mr. L. J. Schmitt, general manager of the department, expects to have the new branch fully engaged within the next few days.
