HORSES GO SORE

Prostration and Chile

NOTES AND COMMENTS

Cuddle Going to Sydney

(By

The Watcher.)

I’. Burgess took Chile to the Wanganui meeting, and the Limond gelding was never in better order, but he unfortunately broke down after a good trial on Friday The trouble is expected to keep him off the scene for the remainder of the winter, which is exceedingly hard luck, as he promised to win early over hurdles and win more than one. Will Need a Spell.

Prosf’ratioh was very sore after his race in the Empire Handicap, and he is missing from the Connolly Handicap to-day. His case is not a complete breakdown, but it is feared that he will have to be spelled for five or six weeks. Fresh Horses.

There are several fresh horses in the Wanganui fields to-day. In the Purua hack Taillight will be making his first appearance at the meeting; in the Belmont Handicap, Farmer and Bazaine; May Hurdles, Saltspray, Silk Sox and Ethiop, s-hile Teddy Boy raced on the flat on Saturday; in the Champion Hack 1 Muggins; Wanganui Steeplechase, Forest Glow, Manawaty and Cometra; Connolly Handicap, Velocipede; and Farewell Hack, Erebus and Airing. ' Another Trip.

Cuddle will leave for Sydney again on Saturday week if present plans are adhered to. The mare is going along well, and will be in good shape for her engagements in Australia. In Work Again.

Mr. W. Higgins’s horses Deficit, Cricket, Debham and Fulojoy, have made another start in their active preparations at Trentham. They have all benefited by their spell.

Promising ’Chaser. Windsor Lad, the winner of the Grandstand Steeplechase at Wanganui on Saturday, is a nine-year-old, but he has done very little racing. He has now started in three steeplechases for two wins and a third, so he is putting up a good record. His dam, Zak, is not a stud book mare, but she is by Cuirassier from Gipsy, and she was in her own day on the turf a winner over country in the Gisborne district. Little England, the sire of VV indsor Lad, was specially imported in 1020 by the Waikato Hunt for. the improvement of the jumping stock in those districts. Probably his best jumper in public so far has been Tudor, who was really high class, but unfortunately unsound.

Diamond Recovered. . . T George has Diamond m full wors again at Trentham after an easy spell since-Auckland, due to soreness. He has thrown off this trouble, but lost a good bit of condition, so it will be unlikely that he will be at his best for the Wellington Steeplechase. Diamond is to have his first school this morning over the big fences since Auckland. The Ranger is going along well, and will be taken to the Dannevirke Hunt meeting, where he will contest the hurdle race.

Bred in Australia. Triune, whose form at Wanganui on Saturday among the hack sprinters w-ae impressive, was bred in New South Wales by Mr. Hunter White. He is a three-year-old chestnut colt by the successful sire Tippler, from Trice, by Three from The Top, bv Louis XIII from the Carbine mare Pirouette. Triune was purchased at the yearling sales by Mr. W. H. Maria for 150gns. There is a lot of speed m his pedigree, and he looks like a horse that will go on improving to good class.

Novices. ... H. and A. Cutts have had no horses racing for some time, but they are working a bunch of two-year-olds that have not raced yet, but that may help to make a verj’ useful team for the spring. Trench Fight is a brother to Fracas, by Winniiig Hit from Scrimmage; Competition, by Polazel from Rivalry; Day Dress, by Day Comet from Ball Dress; and Recollection, by Polazel from Retrospect. These four are owned by Sir Charles Clifford, while Thermidor, by Robespierre from Lady Minerva, is being got ready to carry Mr. G. R. Macdonald’s colours. It will be surprising if these five maidens fail to pay their way. Recollection and Thermidor may lie raced at Trentham next month.

Near at Hand. Vocal is coming right again, and as he is an adept on soft tracks some big successes are in store for him. He won the Southern Handicap at Wingatui last year, and is engaged in the same race to-day. He is booked to race at Trentham.

A Weak Effort. Polydora has given some disheartening displays at times, but that at Wingatui on Saturday was the worst. In the soft going she was never able to get into top gear. She is an acceptor for to-day in the hope that the track may improve, and she may at least earn something toward paying for her trip.
