SEASON IN REVIEW

Hutt Bowling, Tennis and Croquet Club

A year of success in all departments is recorded in the annual report of the Hutt Bowling, Tennis and Croquet Club, which is to be presented to the annual meeting on Thursday evening. The bowling club had entered for A, C and D sections in the pennant games, it is stated. They had held their own up to the fourth round, but were deleted from the competition in the fifth round. Altogether 37 games were won and 23 lost. The “nomination rinks” served three very useful purposes, as they gave play to SI of the members on five or six Saturdays, they served to find the club champion rink, and they formed a basis for teams for pennant and Hutt Valley banner teams. Friendly games were arranged on interclub Saturdays tor 53 teams. The junior pennants were badly lost owing to the club being unable to find a full team on several occasions. The Hutt Valley banner was won by til per cent. wins. The president's cup against Petone .was won by eight games to four.. The five home and five away event against Petoue Central club for the Butler shield was won by six games to four. The Hamilton Cup against Wellington club was lost on points. Club competitions resulted:— Champion singles (39 entries), holder ot the Minehan Cup, E. J. Hill;. runner-up, J. K. Bonner. Champion pairs, Messrs. S. Muter and W. Cole. Nomination rinks, holders of the Moult Shield, Messrs. B. S. Knox, H. Hawthorn, J. K. Bonner and B. Ginger (s.). The winners of the competitions receive silver buttons donated by Mr. M. J. Hodgins. The junior singles competition (Wilson Cup) was not completed. One rink had entered for the Dominion tournament, and met with a fair measure of success. The club was represented in the Wellington centre tournaments at Christmas and Easter, also the Hutt Valley tournament, at New Year and the MacArthur Shield tournament at Easter, Hadwin’s Hutt rink being the runners-up in the latter event. Tennis Season. The tennis section reported that it had been promoted back to senior status, but although the matches had been keenly contested, the teams had not met with any great success. A home and away match had been played with the Martinborough Tenuis Club, and the fixture had proved most successful. ' , The trophy winners were:—Championship : Women’s singles, G. Hadwin; women’s doubles, G. Hadwin and B. Davidson ; men’s singles, O. Bold; men s doubles, I Willis and G. Hill; combined doubles, G. Hadwin and E. Ridyard. Handicaps: Women’s singles, G. Hadwin; Women, s doubles, R. Nolan and 0. Pope; mens singles, O. Bold; men’s doubles, A. J. Nicholls and E. Everton; combined doubles, C. Walker and O. Bold. Eva Pearson Memorial trophies: E. Fry and B. Davidson. Most improved player: R. Swain. Croquet Year. The croquet season was a very pleasant and successful one, although the. bad weather which prevailed throughout limited the play considerably, the report continues. It was unfortunate that the croquet lawn showed signs of a recurrence of the weed which spoilt it a year ago, as the necessary treatment resulted in the green being more or less unfit for match play for the greater part of the season. However, the members were given the use Of the small bowling green, and the result was that many of the club competitions were very closely contested and in doubt until the final games were played. , Teams were entered for the A and intermediate grade inter-club matches and the latter grade players were so successful that their score ranks among the highest recorded for the seasrih. Mrs. Piper, who won the Mrs. Watkins Rose Bowl this season, has generously returned it to the club for annual competition. Following are the results of the club s competitions:—A champion: Mrs. Bock (Mrs. Brook’s trophy); runner-up, Mrs. King (Mrs. Hollard’s trophy).
