Veterans Remember Vereeniging Day
About 40 members of the South African War Veterans’ Association paraded at the association’s rooms in Lambton Quay yesterday morning to recognise Vereeniging Day. They were joined by members of the Royal Navy Association and together, preceded by the band of the Ist Battalion, Wellington Regiment, they marched to St. Paul’s Pro-Cathedral, where a special service was held. On the way to the cathedral a halt was made at. the cenotaph, where a wreath was laid oy Captain J. J. Clark, president of the Wellington South African Veterans’ Association, supported by Mr. J. I. Goldsmith, president of the New Zealand Association, and Mi P. C, Peters, secretary of the Wellington Association. The day being also the anniversary of the Battle of Jutland, a wreath was deposited on the cenotaph by the ex-Royal Navy servicemen. The “Last Post” was played by Drum-Major C. J. Jones, and the “Reveille” by Trumpet-Major Chegwin. The Returned Soldiers’ Association was represented by Colonel A. Cowles and Mr. H. R. Biss.
The service at the cathedral was attended by Hon. F.’ Jones, Minister of Defence, and Hon. W. Lee Martin, Minister of Agriculture.' The lessons were read by Colonel Mabin, and the service was conducted by Canon Percival James, who, in his sermon, spoke of the prospects of peace among nations.
