APPEALS DISMISSED
Condemned Australians (Received May 29, 8.20 p.m.) Melbourne, May 29. Arnold Sodeman, whose appeal to the Privy Council against the death sentence imposed for the mttrdCr of tIA girl'. June Rnshmer. has been dismissed, will be iianged on Monday next at Coburg jail. The appeal by James Earsman. aged 6? pensioner, against the death sentence for the murder at Gilgandra. was to-day dismissed by the Court of Criminal Appeals. Cabinet will to-morrow consider Die cases of five other condemned prisoners. Sodeman was sentenced to death for the murder of June Rnshmer, aged 64 years, at Leongathn on December 2. He was refused leave to appeal by the High Court, and the case was considered by Cahoot early hi April, when >.| was Wl't, to postpone the execution after urgent representations had been made by Sitde man's counsel that he would, if given the opportunity, apply to the Privy Council in forma pauperis for leave to appeal against the imposition of the death penalty. Counsel said be would endeavour to carry out this duly in order to prevent a miscarriage of justice. James Ears man was sentenced to death for the murder of John Hewitt, aged 94, the latter being killed in a hut on January 20. Earsman was recommended to mercy.
