LEGALITY DISPUTED
School Committee Election
HOUSEHOLDERS LOCKED OUT By Telegraph—t’ress A.ssm.-uiiion. Christchurch, May 22. AVhen householders at Okarito, on the AVest Coast, arrived at school on the night set down for tlie election of a committee they found that the school had been locked by the secretary (Airs. E Jones) and the meeting at which tlte committee was elected was held elsewhere. Mrs. Jones disputed the legality of; the election, contending that it had been held in the school residence, and the matter was considered fit. this morning's meeting of the Canterbury Education Board. Tlie secretary, Air. L. E. Rowley, explained tlie position as outlined, stating that Airs. Jones had locked the school on the night of April 27, the date fixed by the board for the election, and had advertised a postponement of the election until Alay 9. Her 'excuse had been that she had not got her books back in time. It was her own fault, however, for she had not sent the books over for audit until the day of the election. Tlie chairman. Air. C. S. Thompson, said that the board had to consider whether the meeting held in a building other than the school was in order. A member said that the meeting was held in a lean-to in the school grounds, and he contended that this was in the school, so that the election was in order. The board decided that the election was valid.
