APPEAL BY CROWN
Ownership of Lake Bed By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, May 22. A ease of considerable interest concerning tlie ownership of the bed of Lake Omapere, between Ohaewai and Okaihau, North Auckland, will be called at a special sitting of the Native Appellate Court of Auckland on Tuesday. This is an appeal by tlie Crown against a judgment of Air. F. 0. A r . Acheson in the Native Land Court in favour of the Maoris. The Maoris claimed that tlie area’ now covered by the lake, which is a very shallow bodj’ of water, was originally dry land, but as the result of extensive fires the surface was lowered and become covered with water. The area has been claimed as Crown land, but the Alaoris hold that it was never sold to the Crown. The Crown contends that the area has never been native land but that it was always under water. It is stated that this is the first occasion on which claims of this nature have been fought in the Appellate Coiirt.
