WELLINGTON CHESS LEAGUE

Annual Competitions FIRST ROUND RESULTS Clubs taking part iu the annual competitions controlled by the Wellington Chess League have been very active during the past few weeks, and the first round fixtures are now completed. Five teams are competing for the first grade shield, nine teams for the second grade shield, and eight teams for the third grade championship, for which, unfortunately, no trophy is yet provided. This compares more than favourably with the previous year, when 19 entries were received. The senior grade comprises teams from the same clubs as in the previous season, with Wellington entering one additional team. This also applies to the second grade competition, except that the Wadestown club reappear with a team after a year's absence from league matches. Prior to the conpnencement of the current season the Technical old students decided to form their own club, and subsequently became affiliated to the league, and have entered a team in the third grade competition where they should obtain valuable experience. The personnel of most of the teams is very different to that of lust year, and it would appear that many new members have been enrolled and that tlie game in consequence continues to enjoy increasing popularity in Wellington and district. In the first grade, Wellington .South, the present holders of the trophy, lost to Wellington A, the former being unfortunate in having to default at board 6. In the remaining match, W.M.C. narrowly defeated the Wellington B team. In the second grade Hutt beat a strong Karori side, and Brooklyn easily accounted for Wellington. The latter team will probably be weak as a result of the club’s policy in entering two senior teams. The Ngaio-Miraraar fixture resulted in an easy win for the latter: Ngaio were very unfortunate in having to default at three boards, due to sudden unforeseen circumstances. Wadestowu and Shell shared the honours in the remaining match. In the third grade W.M.C., last year’s trophy winner, lost to Technical, and the remaining matches were somewhat of a oue-sided nature. Karori. Shell A aud

Brooklyn all won by substantial margins. The Old Students, the newest club to become affiliated with the league, lost heavily in their opening match, but no doubt will improve as the competition progresses.
