EASTBOURNE WORKS

Repairs to .Damaged Sea-wall

“Practically the whole staff have devoted their full time to the Karaka Street extension and the repairing of the seawall,” states the works committee report presented to the East bourne Borough Council on Thursday evening. “Fair progress has been made on both of these jobs. The adverse weather toward the latter end of the month considerably ini' pedetl the progress of this work. During the next few weeks the water mains in Karaka Street will have to be shifted because of the grade being several feet lower than the present position of the main. This will entail a fair amount of work, as the main will have to be disconnected and a temporary service laid to the three houses on the highest'point of the road. "A considerable quantity of spoil has been taken to the recreation ground nnd car camp site. Until we have passed the point where the main will have to be disconnected, no appreciable amount of spoil will be obtained. Numerous springs on the lower portion of the road have given considerable trouble, necessitating a fair amount of subsoil drainage. Seams of rock have been encountered ou the excavation ; this has been successfully loosened by blasting. “It. has been found that, portions of the sea-wall have been tilled iu with sand and shingle, the majority of which was washed out with the recent ' stormy weather and high tides. The worst portions will need to be entirely rebuilt. The apron of the wall has also been skimped in places. This will necessitate the removal of a fair amount of sand and the relaying of the apron.”
