Masterton Women’s Open Golf Championship MISS HORNABROOK BEATS MISS JAMES Dominion Special Service. Mastei’ton, May 21. Excitement was tense during the semifinals and finals of the Masterton women’s open golf championship played on the Lansdowne links to-day when the threeday tournament was concluded. The open championship was won by Miss J. Hornabrook, Masterton club, who defeated her club-mate, Miss U. James, at the twentyfirst. The Lansdowne handicap wan won by Miss M. Peacock, Wellington, who defeated Miss M. Struthers, Hastings. 1 up.
The semi-finalists in the open were Mrs. Guy Williams and Miss James and Miss Hornahrook and Mrs. Crombie. Considerable interest attached to the meeting of the four because of the fact that the New Zealand Ladies’ Golf Union hopes to send a team to play for the Tasman Cup during the Adelaide centenary. Mrs. Williams and Miss James were the first pair off the tee in the semi-finals. Miss James winning 2 up. A feature of the game was the deadly approaches ot both players, Miss James having four one-foot putts and Mrs. 'Williams three. Mrs. Crombie and Miss HornnbrotiA also had a very close finish, Miss Hornabrook winning 1 up. Both played at the top of their form, but Miss Hornahrook s putting was more consistent. The final was a great battle. birdies at the eighth and ninth Miss Hornabrook led 2 up and gained another hole at the eleventh. At the sixteenth Miss James squared the match. Exciting play saw the remaining holes halved up to the twenty-first, where Miss James s second just failed to reach the green, and she lost to Miss Hornahrook, who was down in bogey figures.
