Reports of Monthly Gatherings EKETAHUNA MEETING Tbe Ekctahuna W.omen's Institute’s May meeting wag very well attended. The delegate, Mrs. Macky, who .attended the half-yearly meeting of the BuslvWairarapa federation, held in Masterton last month, gave a report of the proceedings. Mrs. B. Morriss, Rongokako. gave n demonstration of rug-making from undyed fleece wool and scraps of woollen cioth. The competition for the best jar of autumn foliage produced 15 entries. Tbe trophy was won by Mrs. Oliver, Mrs. Baucke and Mrs. C. Welch gaining second and third places, respectively. Belmont. At the May meeting of the Belmont Women’s Institute, two new members were welcomed. A report of the recent meeting of the southern Wellington federation was given by Miss Christie, and resolutions passed were explained by Mrs. Smith. The programme, which was in the hands of the singing circle, opened with the singing of several glees, after which Mrs. Gibson Young gave a talk on the origin and development of music. This was followed with great, interest. A com- : petition, “names of songs,” was won by Mrs. 11. Bennett, and the open competition by Mrs. A. Bennett. The president expressed appreciation of the singing circle’s enjoyable programme, and presented their leader, Mrs. Gibson Young, with a bouquet. In the unavoidable absence of Mrs. Davis. Mrs. Howard presided. There were present about thirty members. Afternoon tea was served, the hostesses being Mesdames IV. White, 11. Smith. B. King, and F. King. The competition for the best collection of jam was won by Mrs. W. Davis, with Mesdames B. Tutt and May Smith second equal. Mrs. Hume, Plimmerton, gave a short address. Oliariu. Owing to bad weather, there was only n Final! attendance of member at the May meeting of the Ohariu IVemeu’s Institute. Miss Nossiter presided. After routine business was concluded, the president welcomed Mrs, Gaby, of the St. John Ambulance Association. A report was read of the annual council meeting of the South Wellington federation at: Paraparauniu. A competition for the most economical cake made with one egg was won by Mrs. Bruce. Miss Lilab Bryant coming second. Mrs. Guby gave a bilk on home nursing, which was keenly followed. The president, in thanking Mrs. Gaby, presented her with a dainty posy. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Bryant, Randall. Waite .and Stephens. Iluhanui. Mrs. Watkins presided over n fair attendance of members for the May meeting of tbe Hukanui W.I. It was decided not to send a delegate to the annual conference. Mrs. Harrington presented B report of the Bush Wairarapa Federation Council, meeting. Miss E. Cavanagh. Hamtta W.1.. demonstrated the linking ■” scagrass stools. ! The competition for the afternoon, the

best-laundered tablecloth, was won by Mrs. Wcnham, with Mrs. Goodin, Miss E. Gardiner and Miss A. Lawrence equal for second place. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames- Mooney, Mabey and Rassmuseu. Newlands. | The monthly meeting of the Newland's Women’s Institute was presided over by Mrs. Horridgc. Mrs. Watkins, secretary, I was chosen as delegate to represent the institute at the Dominion Federation meeting in Dunedin. The report of the council meeting at Paraparaumu was read by Mrs. Ilorridge and Mrs. Nichols. Three new members were welcomed. Mats made from silk stockings were demonstrated by Mesdames Kettlewell and Bing. The competitions resulted as follow: Mrs. Kettlewell first for eggshell work with Mrs. Broad second; first place for gingernuts, Mrs. Pritchard, with Mrs. Knight second. Afternoon tea was served by tiie hostesses, Mesdames Brownell, Frazer, Hunter ami Stanley. Upper Plain. The April and May meetings of. the j new Upper Plain Women's Institute ■ were well attended, and some very use-I ful and interesting work was done. This included a rug-making demonstration by Mrs. Tankersley. reed-loom weaving shown by Miss Dawson, and covering of tins or jars with silver paper, demonstrated by Mrs, G. Laing. A good library has been opened, and subscriptions from It will be used iu buying books of an educational nature. The competitions, button-holes, darning, potato-peeling, best pikelets and a nursery rhyme romance all brought large entries, and some fine results were obtained. A travel talk by Miss Dawson and a reading by Mrs. Thomas told of the* growth of the W.I; movement. Members decided to start a drama circle and also a dancing class during the winter months. llorocka. The monthly meeting of the Ilorocka Women’s Institute was held recently. Mrs. Urquhart read an interesting letter from the link correspondenl ’>i> Dorse:. England. The president called for nominations to send a delegate to the nunual conference in Duuediu. Mrs. Lunt and Mrs, Thomas were nominated, the former being file successful candidate. As the result of a request from the U.S.A, at. Pougaroa it was decided to purchase Anzac stamps to the value *'f 5/-. Mrs. Frame gave an address on the council meeting held in Masterton last: month. There were several competitions, for the best plate of pikelets, a jam jar of chrysanthemums, and an infant’s frock made from left-over materials. Guessing of proverbs proved interesting, and the tearing of a pig from paper caused much amusement. Miss Fleming gave a demonstration on the making of thrill articles groat interest being taken in the articles' she displayed. Items by the singing circle wore much enjoyed. Afternoon tea was served.
