OBITUARY
Archbishop Diaz (Received May 20, 7.40 p.b.) Mexico City. May 20. The death has occurred of Archbishop Pascual Diaz, leader of the Roman Catholic Church in the fight with the Mexican Government. Mr. Marmaduke Pickthall London, May 19. The death has occurred of the novelist. Mr. Marmaduke Pickthall. He became a Mohammedan and was regarded as a possible successor to the late Lord Headley as head of the Moslems in England.
Mr. Marmaduke Pickthall was born in 1575 and for some time was in the educational service of an Indian prince. His father was rector of Chillesford. in Suffolk. and his mother the daughter of a rear-admiral. Mr. Pickthall was educated at Harrow and on the Continent and spent three years in the Near East on elose terms with Orientals, studying Arabic and acquiring a liking for Eastern ways of thought. He lived among the Druses on Mount Lebanon and Inter made n study of conditions m Egypt. He edited the “Bombay Chronicle" in 1920-24. He began to write fiction at an early age and published his “Said the Fisherman” in 1903. Since then he has brought out a number of books, but perhaps was best known for his “Oriental Encounters."
