NEW CLOTHES FOR OLD
Dominion Special Service. (By “Fenella.”) London, April 1-1. Frills, ruffles, new necklace fashions, ami queer belts . . . Jill these ways of giving tired clothes fresh life emerge from London’s latest fashion shows. Ruffles are the most intriguing way. 1 have a black day frock I have transformed into a cocktail dress by this means. It bad a high neck, so all I bad to do was to ruche several yards of white organdie so that it stood out in folds which rather resembled those of a brand-new pie frill. I made two much smaller ruffles, one for each cuff, and then stitched them into place. To complete the transformation, 1 bought one of the new black sequin belts. They are about three inches wide and have a diamante buckle. Frills would make a similar transformation, but ruffles are more effective. Wide linen cowboy belts—complete with pockets—are another novelty which will give fresh interest to an old oflice frock. They are quite simple to make. Just cut out the belt, from a piece of linen, stiffen it with buckram and buy a neat buckle and two zip fasteners. The belt should fasten at. (he centre of the back, while its two pockets should be in the front. One could be used for handkerchiefs—wlille the other would bo useful for money and :i powder pull. The new necklaces are nearly all made of metal—bronze, silver-gilt, chromium and even delicate gold filigree. Earrings show the same trend and it is also possible to get dress buttons to match both necklace and earrings.
And. as a final touch of smartness, there comes the new square handbag. They are extremely attractive and useful —a handle "liar” across the side makes them easy to carry. Inside (lie lid is a large mirror, while separate compart incuts fitted with purse, powder compact and comb make them very convenient to use.
