BEER SOLD AT DAY’S BAY
Storekeeper Convicted Forfeiture of liquor valued at £7 to £8 and a fine of £lO was the penalty imposed on Malcolm Lawrence McDuff for selling liquor without a license at Day's Bay by Mr. 11. P. Lawry, S.M.. in the Petone court yesterday. Senior-Sergeant G. Sivyer, prosecuting, said that Constable Anderson had bought four bottles of ale from defendant on one occasion and two bottles on another. With Constables Squire and McNamara he had visited defendant's premises, and had been shown a number of bottles of beer, a case of whisky and a small quantity of wine and gin. On the shop being searched, eight flasks of whisky were found on a shelf with vinegar., A number of complaints had been received about defendant’s selling of liquor. Entering a plea of guilty. Mr. J. L. Mac Duff, for defendant, eaid that the quantity of beer found had not been great. McDuff had been in business for just over a year and was building up a good trade as a storekeeper. He had kept the whisky so that he could “shout” for customers when they paid their bills. This was his first offence, and he had been given no warning by the police.
