NOT TO BE ALLOWED
Semi-Intoxicated Persons Driving Cars By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, May 20. “You and other drivers have to learn that this sort of thing is not going to be allowed. It is obvious you were in a semi-intoxicated condition and driving in a negligent manner,’’ said Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M., when convicting George Tailentire, a timber worker, aged 34. in the Magistrate’s Court of negligent driving. Accused also was charged with falling to stop after an accident; failing to render assistance; and failing to report to the police. The charges arose out of an accident on the new North Road on February 22, when a man was knocked down and seriously injured. “Apparently you were in such a condition that you merely pulled up and went on.’’ said the magistrate. “I have the public to consider and any man who behaves as you behaved must have an exemplary sentence. If fines will not stop you, then you must be put where you cannot offend.’’
Accused was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment on the negligent driving charge and convicted and ordered to pay costs on the other three counts.
