WAGES, EMPLOYMENT AND PROFITS

Over 12,000,000 Out Of Work in America (Received May 19, 7.35 p.m.) New York, May 19. Tlie American Federation of Labour has Issued a report for the first quarter of 1936 showing that employment gained 2.4 per cent, and wages 4.8 per cent., while business profits rose by 36 per cent. The cost of living rose two per cent., so the actual wage gain was only 2.8 per cent. The report warns that the failure of re-employment to keep pace with business recovery has created a serious problem. Although 2,800.000 more persons are working than a year ago, there are still 12,184,000 unemployed.
