COAL MINE BILL
Government Criticised In Commons NEWSPAPER COMMENT Result Described As Humiliation By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. (Received May 19, 8.40 p.m.) London, May 19. Tiie Government suffered what all papers describe as a humiliation in tlie House of Commons when Mr. W. Runciman, President of the Board of Trade, in moving the second reading of the Coal Mines Bill, detailed amendments which the Government proposed to make. Labour members protested that they were confronted by a new Bill with concessions to the owners’ viewpoint, indicating that the Government did not know its own mind. Mr. M inston Churchill supported tlie Labour members' view. , . Mr. Baldwin surrendered, promising another day for debate. In the meantime a White Paper will be circulated explaining the concessions. “The Times” comments that the Government has suffered a detraction which it may not easily retrieve.
