SUPPLY OF ORANGES
Embargo on Australian Relaxed 50,000 CASES THIS WINTER “For some time the Government has been giving consideration to the question of the importation of the oranges which will be required this year to supply tiie Dominion's needs,” said the 1 Minister of Finance and Customs, Hon. W. Nash, in an interview last night. “As is well known, the prosperity of tiie people of the Cook Islands is dependent to a very considerable extent on the exportation of oranges to New Zealand, and it is the desire of the Government to ensure as far as possible, in conformity witli the general public interest, that the islanders are assured a reasonable opportunity of marketing their product in the Dominion. Present indications are that there will lie a greater quantity of Cook Island oranges available this year than during the previous two years. "Even allowing for the greater production, however, it will be necessary for oranges to be imported from other sources adequately to meet the public requirements. "In the meantime, therefore, it has been decided to relax the existing embargo against Australia to the extent that permission has been granted for the exportation to New Zealand during the months of June, July and August of a total quantity of 50,000 cases of South Australian oranges, and It is expected that this quantity, together with the importations which will be available from other sources, will amply meet the Dominion’s needs. “Should it be found that the supplies from the Cook Islands do not reach the quantities which it is expected will be imported, the Government will immediately consider allowing further importations from South Australia.”
