Policemen’s Speed In Question Dominion Special Service. Greytown, May 19. A short time ago the Wellington police made a hurried visit to Carterton, and it was alleged they went at an excessive speed through Greytown. A ratepayer complained to the Greytown Borough Council, and the council sent, a complaint to the department. The Hon. I’. Fraser made an inquiry, and advised a meeting of the council that he was satisfied the police ear did not exceed tile limit. The letter was received. Present at the meeting were: —The Mavar (Mr. A. LIVE STOCK MARKET Waipukurau Sale Waipukuraii, May 19. There was a large yarding of store sheep and a moderate one of fats at the Waipukurau stock sale to-day. Store cattle were in moderate supply, with a small entry in the fat section. Prices for sheep revealed little change, while the demand for young steers, which were the bulk of the store lines, was quiet, passings being frequent. Several entries of store heifers sold well. Cattle: Five medium fat Hereford and cross steers, £8; medium Red Polled cows, £5; pen 72 good store three-year dehorned Hereford'heifers, £5/16/-; 35 similar aged Herefords, £5/4/-; good Jersey heifer, just calved. £7/2/6. Sheep: 15 big wethers, 25/6; 47 small wethers, 25/-: prime heavy wether, 26/6; four prime, 25/-; prime Southdown ewe, 2.3/9; two prime lambs, 22/9; two prime heavy, 26/3: 17 do.. 23/1; 212 good store four-tooth five-year ewes, woolly, with Southdown rams. The N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., conducted a clearing sale of dairy stock, etc., at the farm, Te Horo,

last Friday, on account of Mr. E. R. Gawler. There was a very large attendance, and competition was keen throughout, best cows selling from £9 to £l4 10/-; medium do., £6/5/- to £B/15/-; and barring five three-quartered and empty cows, which sold from £3/7/6 to £5/2/6, Hie herd made the good average of £S/5/-. Spring calving heifers, £5/17/6; weaner heifers, £4/2/6; Jersey bull, £7; very old light farm horses, £5/15/- to £2O/10/-. Brake, £9/10/-; spring drays, £5/10/and £l2/10/-; hay stacker. £6; hay rake, £6 ; 2-horse mower, £S ; single-horse mower, £7: light Ford truck. £2O; distributor. £11; s.f. plough, £9/10/-; g. harrows, £4 5/-; tine do., ifl/Z/- : discs, £8; scarifier. £.3. Sundries fetched full values. The vendor had everything arranged in firstclass order, and this greatly facilitated the conduct of the sale.

The decision to hold championship events on August 1 was reached at a meeting of the 'Wanganui Harriers’ Subcentre committee on Monday. It is expected t’hat six teams from the Marton, Wanganui and 'Wanganui Y.M.C.A. clubs will compete in a race over a distance of six and a quarter miles. In addition, an effort will be made to raise funds to enable the sub-centre to send their representatives to the West Coast (North Island) and New Zealand championships.
