ANTARCTIC MAIL
Missing Byrd Covers OFFICIAL EXPLANATION After nearly 2} years, letters sent down to Little America with the second Byrd Expedition are again reaching New Zealand —without stamps, without postmarks and without cachets. Just as they were sent, except that the money is missing. Accompanying them is the following letter from the Byrd Antarctic Expedition II Little America Cover Bureau. 3rd and R Streets, N.E., Washington, D.C., which explains the fate of the covers which have not come back: — “Prior to the departure and during the time the Byrd Expedition spent in the Antarctic there were a number of letters received and given to Mr. Clark, Admiral Byrd’s secretary on the expedition. For some reason uot apparent at this time, Mr. Clark failed to give these letters proper attention, and stored them in some boxes on board ship. After the expedition was disbanded in June, 1935, these boxes were opened and the mall discovered, and as it seemed to pertain to the mail service to Little America, it was sent to this office for attention. “The enclosed letters addressed to you were found in the lot. Any information you can let us have concerning these letters will be appreciated, as we would like to adjust the matter satisfactorily.”
