Ethiopian Government Commission NOTES FROM MANAWATU Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, May IS. Formerly a Kopane farmer, Hubert Corneille <le Mey D’Alkemade, applied- to Mr. Justice Ostler for discharge from bankruptcy in the Palmerston North Supreme Court to-day. Mr. J. Graham (Feilding) appeared for bankrupt, and Mr. J. P. Innes on behalf of the Repatriation Department and other creditors, opposed the application. It was stated that bankrupt failed in 1922, and since then had followed various occupations. He had possessed a commission to make arrangements on behalf of the Ethiopian Government for the formation of an air squadron. His Honour: That is a bit late now. Counsel added.that when bankrupt reached Honolulu in pursuance of his objective he had been stopped by the American Government, probably on a request from New Zealand, and was forced to abandon the project. He had an offer of a position in foreign parts, if he could secure his discharge from bankruptcy, which had militated against him. His Honour said that it would appear that bankrupt had suffered from a war injury which might have accounted for his unusual actions. It was 14 years since he had been adjudged bankrupt. His Honour added that he was not disposed to hang a millstone .round bankrupt's neck for the whole of his life, nor could he order any preferential payment to any particular creditor or creditors.- He entered an unconditional discharge. Miniature Rifle Club’s Meeting.

Incompatibility Leads to Divorce. An undefended petition in divorce was heard bv Mr. Justice Ostler in the I a.merston'North Supreme Court this morning, petitioner being Caroline Myna Dorothea Brown, of New Plymouth, represented by Mr. R. R. Burridge (Masterton), and respondent John Alber.. Brown, of Carterton. Petitioner stated that she carried respondent in Masterton in 191 G. and there were two children of the marriage. County Roads Closed.

Four hill roads in the Kairanga county are now closed until August 31 to heavy traffic exceeding three tons. This action is necessary every year owing to the damage which would otherwise be, done to the road foundations by four-ton lorries carting heavy loads of firewood during the winter months. Playing on the Levin club's courts, teams from the Manawatu Central amt Levin Badminton Clubs fought a draw :u sets, but the former club carried off the honours in points by a margin of. 48. Each team won 12 sets, but the visitors scored 309 points to the home team's 261. In the women's singles, the visitors won four games to Levin's two, but in the men's singles the scores were reversed. ■ Two of the three women’s singles went to the home team, but the visitors took' two of the three men’s doubles.
