“INFORMED UPON BY OTHER CHINESE”
Opium-smoking Charge Informed upon, according to bis council, by some other Chiuese, Ah Lym, aged 35, a cook, was convicted and Dued £25 and costs by Mr. IV. F. Stilwell, S.M., iu the Wellington Magistrate's Court yesterday on a charge of being found in possession of prepared opium. Ah Lym pleaded guilty. Sub-luspector C. E. Roach said at 10.15 a.uu on Saturday, Seuior-Sergeant D. J. O’Neill and a constable went to accused’s rooms in a house in Taranaki Street, after hearing that he was in possession of opium. They saw accused, who book them through to his bedroom, where the.y found a pipe, opium, and a slush-lamp. Accused said he had got the opium from Haloing Street for his own use. Four years ago he had been charged with oeing found on premises used for the purposes of smoking opium. For accused, Mr. A. B. Sievwrigbt said Ah Lym had been iierfeclly frank wbeu the police arrived. It appeared he was the victim of information given the police by some other Chinese. Ab Lym’s smoking was nob au organised arrangement; be was the only person on the premises. Counsel submitted it was a case for the minimum penalty under the Dangerous Drugs Act. Accused was convicted and fined £25 and 10/- costs.
