HATAITAI ELECTORS
Association’s Annual Meeting ELECTION OF OFFICERS Questions affecting the district wore discussed at the twenty-sixth annual meeting of the Hataitai Municipal Electors’ Association, which was held in the Methodist Church schoolroom, Waitoa Road, last night. The president, Mr. E. J. Lezard, presided over an attendance of about 50 residents and ratepayers. Mr. W. Appleton, chairman of the City Council works committee, was also present. The annual report of the executive, a summary of which has already been published, together with the accounts, was adopted. Mr. Appleton read a communication supplied by the city engineer, Mr. K. E. Luke, setting out the work done iu Hataitai during the financial year ended March 31 last. This showed that £l7OO had been spent in the district out of revenue for street works. Mr. Luke expressed tlie view tiiat considering that Hataitai was smaller than some of the other suburban areas and more fully developed, the expenditure had been fair. The corner at Moxhani Avenue and Taurima Street (the approach to the tunnel) had been set back, and £4OOO had been spent out of loan money to improve the stormwater drainage. Mr. Luke said that with regard to the current year’s work, apart from tlie completion of the loan works, very little special work was provided for in the district, the only special item listed being a footpath in Overtoun Terrace. The district would, however. receive the usual attention from the maintenance votes. Considerable discussion followed on the question of the corner at Moxbam Avenue and the approach to the tunnel. The opinion of the meeting was divided as to whether the north corner should be further splayed to give easier entrance and exit to and from the north for motor vehicles, or whether it should be left as it is in the interests of reasonable safety for pedestrians. It was agreed, however, that the only adequate solution was the construction of a road from the tunnel mouth behind the electricity sub-statiou in Taurima Street and out to Waitoa Road. Several speakers advocated the provision of au island at the junction of Moxhani Avenue and the tunnel approach as a safety point for pedestrians, but others considered that the road was not wide enough at that point. The danger of the crossing to children and old people was stressed by all speakers. Mr. Lezard said the executive had fully discussed the question of an island refuge, but had come to the conclusion that it was not practicable. Mr. Appleton said the council and its officers wished to leave the corner as it was without alteration, and he personally agreed with that view iu the interests of the safety of the public. The question was referred back to the executive for further consideration. Various other suggestions for the improvement of the suburb were considered and referred to the incoming executive. The election of officers resulted: President. Mr. G. P. Anderson; vicepresidents. Messrs. E. J. Lezard, A. E. Batt. A. Leigh Hunt; lion, secretarytreasurer, Mr. C. Meachen; bon. auditor, Mr. J. A.
