Business Brisk Last Week AUSTRALIANS PREFERRED Business was brisk in the stock and share markets last week and there was a substantial increase in turnover. lhe most favoured issues- were those of Australian industrial and trading concerns, which were traded actively ami showed a distinctly firmer tendency. Broken Hill Proprietary, for example, advanced on sales from 60/9 to 64/-, a gain of 3/3, ami the new issue 10/- paid sold to 30/b. Australian Glass had good business at from 88/- to 89/3. British Tobaccos were firm at up to 40/-. and there were frequent dealings in Dunlop-I’erdriaus, which touched 16/4. G. J. Coles staged n strong advance, sales ranging from 73/6 to 77/3, a rise on the week of 3/9. A feature of the weeks trading was the sharp rise in Woolwortbs..following the announcement of the doubling of the Sydney concern’s capital, carrying a boons share distribution of one for one ordinary. Woolworths Ltd. moved UP on active trading from £7/17/6 to £9/16/-, and Woolworths (N.Z.) ordinaries sold at from £6 to £7/10/-. Some fairly large parcels ot Government 3} per cent, stock changed hands during the week at firm rates, The 4 per cent, stocks, 1955, advanced to £lO6/2/6.
