EXTENSION OF USES

Power Adapted to Variety of Purposes LUXURIES ARE NOW NECESSITIES Electric street lamps introduced Wellington to the advantages of electricity nearly 50 years ago. How much progress has been made since ■then in adapting this power for other purposes can best be realised when tlie number of domestic electrical appliances which are now considered necessities is listed. Once a householder thought he. was in clover if he had his house lighted by electricity; now the electric radiator, range, iron, water-heater, jug, toaster, kettle, are rapidly being elevated to the position of being regarded as essentials and not luxuries. People are quickly realising electricity’s extraordinary usefulness in every aspect of domestic life and its extreme simplicity in operation. Similarly, progress is being made very rapidly in the manufacture of electrical equipment. Reliability is being ensured hind attention is being paid to Hie construction of appliances which can be bought at a reasonable price and maintained cheaply. Never

before has it been possible for such perfected labour-saving devices to be available for installation in the ordinary home. Electricity is not the servant of the rich; it is the utility of the poor as well. Comfort, cleanliness and modernity are assured by the use of ■ electric power. It is available not only for lighting, heating, and cooking, but also for hot-water systems. On the next page is advertisel the invention of a Wellington tlrm, 11. N. Maunder, Ltd., which, it is claimed, will give the housewife hot waler whenever she wants it and in whatever quantities are desired. The use of electric ranges in Wellington is being encouraged. Advertised are three types which have been proved will meet the special requirements of the New Zealand kitchen. The “Neeeo” range, made at Kaiwarra, is the manufacture of the National Electrical and Engineering Company; the “Moffat” is distributed by Turnbull and Jones, Ltd., and the “Magnet” is imported from England by the British General Electric Company. In addition to these articles, washing machines, irons, vacuum cleaners, sewing machines, dish washers, floor polishers, refrigerators, radios, clocks, are being made for use with the electric current which is supplied by the Electricity Department of the Wellington City Corporation at a domestic tariff which is lower than that of any other city in New Zealand.
