Sixty Miles an Hour on Hutt Road TAXI-DRIVER FINED For driving along the Hutt Hoad on April. 18 in a manner dangerous to the public, Denis Condon, taxi-man, was yesterday fined £3 and costs, and had his license endorsed, On a charge of driving at a dangerous speed he was convicted and discharged. He was stated to have been travelling at 60 miles an hour. The case was heard by Mr.'E. D. Mosley, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court, Wellington. Mr. A. B. Sievwright appeared for the defence, Mr. Mr. A. R. Cooper for the prosecution. F. G. Tickner, traffic inspector, fiaitl he had followed the taxi in a southerly direction toward Kaiwarra. He had seen it pass simultaneously three other vehicles abreast. He estimated its speed at 60 miles an hour, bis own speedometer having indicated that speed while he was following it. Condon said that the traffic officer could not have been following him closely, or he would have peen him in the rear-vision mirror. Ho denied travelling at anything like tbe pace alleged. Evidence of a conflicting nature was called by prosecution and defence. "In this case there is considerable discrepancy —in fact the evidence of the prosecution deliberately contradicts that of the defence.” said the magistrate. “The traffic inspector, a trained observer, has given the result of his observations in sworn evidence. T have no doubt in my own mind that, his evidence is correct.”
