NOTED ORCHESTRA
New Zealand Tour Proposed Mr. H. Gladstone Hill, conductor of Derry’s Military Band, Christchurch, will leave Wellington to-day to attend the “coming of age” celebrations of the State Conservatorium of Music, Sydney. Mr. Hill said last night that the present director of the Conservatorium, Dr. Edgar L. Bainton, when in New Zealand during last January, invited him to be present at the celebrations, as the members who were in the orchestra on the tour of New Zealand in 1920, were anxious for a reunion with Mr. Hill present. There was also a feeling that the time was opportune for another visit of the orchestra to New Zealand, and a desire was expressed that Mr. Hill should manage this tour, as be did the one sixteen years ago. Mr. Hill said he had consulted many men in the south, and in Wellington yesterday, who were associated with the previous visit, or who were in a position to offer advice as to the possibilities of the contemplated tour during next Christmas. In every case the answers were in the most optimistic strain. He felt sure the musical societies of the four cities would collaborate as they did for Mr. Henri Verbrugghen. Ollicials of the Royal Choral Union had offered to help in every way.
