NAZI BAN LIFTED
. .. —• Eckener Affair Settled Berlin, April 29. It is understood that the Eckener affair has been settled and that the Propaganda Ministry’s order to the Press not to mention the name has been withdrawn. Dr. Eckener will now carry out his intention of accompanying the Zeppelin Hindenburg on her maiden flight to the United States in May. He objected to doing so while' still officially “disgraced,” while the authorities were reluctant to see the flight marred by a political controversy.
A Berlin cable dated April 2, when the Elindenburg was on its first flight to Brazil, stated that it was expected that Dr, Eckener would be dismissed because he declined to allow the Hindenburg to be used for election propaganda ' and ordered election posters to be removed from the Zeppelin yards. The Minister of Propaganda, Dr. Goebbels, instructed the German Press to eliminate Dr. Eckener's name and photograph from their columns. The “Daily Telegraph's” Berlin correspondent said that although he was an ardent nationalist. Dr. Eckener was not a supporter of the present regime and refused to give the Nazi salute. It was reported that he was greatly distressed at the necessity of decorating the Hindenburg’s tail with large swastikas.
