ISLAND ORANGES
Citrus Fruit From Rarotonga The Makura. which reached Wellington on Tuesday, brought down from Rarotonga the first shipment of citrus fruit for the season, states the Rarotongan correspondent of the Press Association. The total fruit shipment comprised 4627 cases of bananas, 711 cases of oranges, and 366 cases of mandarins. The oranges had been heavily graded and only 711 cases were accepted for shipment. The whole shipment of oranges was sent on consignment. For the bananas the price paid to the growers was the same as for the last shipment of bananas, 2/6 per case at the packing shed, and 3/- per case delivered to the wharf. It is understood that practically the whole shipment. was sold locally, no bananas being sent on consignment. Next month the Cape Horn will make a call at Aitutaki and Mangala to pick up the first of the season’s oranges from those islands. A good shipment is expected and possibly some 8000 cases may be shipped. It is understood that trees are bearing well and large shipments should result in later months.
