SMALLER ORDERS POSSIBLE
■—•o Japan and Australian Wool (Received April 31). 12.10 a.m.) Tokio, April 29. Mr. Shigeyasu Ijima, managing director of the Australia Japanese Society, in an interview, said that Japan had expected to take SOO.OOO bales of Australian wool this season, but, due to a temporary business setback over the proposed trade treaty, she anticipates taking only 700.000 bales plus 50,000 from New Zealand. However, if good relations with Australia are maintained, imports are likely to exceed 800.000. On the contrary, if Australia provokes Japan to impose a trade protection law, the duty on Australian wool will raise the cost to tlie South African level. The Near East Trade Society has started a movement to encourage the import of wool from Iraq and adjacent countries for the double purpose of promoting Japanese exports and retaliation against Australia.
A Canberra cable published yesterday stated that the Federal Ministry hopes to be able to place a trading agreement between tlie Commonwealth and Japan before Parliament for ratification before the end of tlie present session. It is understood that Japan has provided a solution to tlie apparent deadlock in the negotiations by reducing the output of rayon, and the Commonwealth may now he in a position to avoid the reported restrictive action against this Japanese commodity by accepting n treaty which will not conflict with Japanese or British miinufanturiug interests.
